Echo He Was Awarded 2016 the YishuAwards for Critical Writing and Curating on Contemporary Chinese Art
Fou Gallery is pleased to announce that the founder and curator of Fou Gallery- Echo He was awarded 2016 the Yishu Awards for Critical Writing and Curating on Contemporary Chinese Art. The other four recipients are senior critic and curator Chen Tong, art critics Carol Yinghua Lu and Lu Mingjun, and junior curator Bao Dong.
“Yishu Awards for Critical Writing on Contemporary Chinese Art” was established to encourage and celebrate scholars who are making important contributions to the evolution of contemporary Chinese art. Two critics were awarded each year in previous years. This year, with the generous financial support of Cc Foundation, Shanghai, three additionalawards were granted for two junior curators and one senior art critic/curator, and this awardwas renamed as “Yishu Awards for Critical Writing and Curating on Contemporary Chinese Art”. Each year the Yishu Editorial team invites scholars, who are nationally and internationally renowned as jurors, to recommend nominees. Over the years this awardhas had jurors, including Gao Minglu, Britta Erickson, Hou Hanru, Karen Smith, Wu Hung, Jiayi Wang, Martina Köppel-Yang, Li Xianting, Julia M. Andrews and Gao Shiming, for giving recommendations.
This year, “Yishu Awards for Critical Writing and Curating on Contemporary Chinese Art” panel includes three specially invited guests: Eugene Y. Wang, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Professor of Asian Art at Harvard University; Li Pi, the senior curator of Hong Kong M+, the Museum of visual culture; Amy Cheng, an independent curator and the director of TheCube Project Space in Taipei. Professor Wang and Li Pi each recommended one junior critic and one junior curator, while the first recipient for the senior critic/curatoraward was recommended by Zheng Huihua.
On November 10, 2016, four award recipients were invited to the Yishu Award panel discussion: Alternative Practices and Independent Spaces for Contemporary Chinese Artheld in ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair. The discussion focused on the relationships between alternative practices and independent spaces and their impacts on contemporary art system and art market. Meanwhile, the recipients were granted theawards at the opening reception at ART021. Each of the four junior recipients wasawarded with 6,000 Canadian dollars, while the senior recipient was granted 10,000 Canadian dollars. Their signature articles were published in Yishu magazine on November 2016.
“Yishu Awards for Critical Writing and Curating on Contemporary Chinese Art” is sponsored by the Canadian and Chinese public service organizations as well as individual supporters. This year’s Award received significant support from Cc Foundation founded by collector Zhou Dawei at Shanghai and Hong Kong and ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair.
“Yishu中国当代艺评奖”自2010年起设立，其目的是为了鼓励与表扬对认识理解中国当代艺术历史与现状做出卓越贡献的学者； 以前每年评出两位优秀的批评家。该评选今年得到上海Cc基金会的鼎力赞助，除继续颁发两位中青年批评家奖外，新增加了颁给两位中青年策展人和一位资深批评家/策展人的奖项，并改名为“Yishu中国当代艺评和策展奖”。每年Yishu杂志编委会邀请在国内外富有声望的专家学者担任评选人，由他们分别推荐获奖者。历年担任评选人的有：高名潞、林似竹（Britta Erickson）、侯瀚如、凯伦（Karen Smith）、巫鸿、王嘉骥、杨天娜（Martina Köppel-Yang）、栗宪庭、安雅兰（Julia M. Andrews）和高士明。
今年“Yishu中国当代艺评和策展奖”特邀的评选人有三位：哈佛大学洛克菲勒亚洲艺术史专席教授汪悦进（Eugene Y. Wang ），香港M+视觉艺术博物馆希克高级策展人皮力，以及独立策展人、台北立方计划空间总监郑慧华（Amy Cheng）。汪悦进教授和高级策展人皮力各自推荐了一位中青年批评家和一位中青年策展人，首次颁发的资深批评家/策展人奖则是由中青年评选人郑慧华推荐的。
2016 年11月10日，四位获奖者应邀参加了在Art021上海廿一当代艺术博览会中举办的Yishu奖论坛“中国当代艺术中的另类实践和独立空间”，由Yishu主编华睿思（Keith Wallace）主持。论坛主要探讨了另类实践和独立空间对于当代艺术系统和艺术市场的影响，与此同时当晚在Art021的开幕晚会上还给各位获奖者颁发了奖状。四位中青年获奖者各获得6000加元奖金，资深获奖者获得10000加元奖金。他们的代表性论文已发表在2016年11月号的Yishu杂志上。
