With Civil Arts, we invite you to join our exhibition walkthrough of Szelit Cheung: Flat, led by curator Yifu Liu.

Flatis a contemplative solo exhibition by Szelit Cheung that explores the poetic and perceptual dimensions of emptiness. Through luminous architectural paintings devoid of figures or narrative, Cheung reframes the void not as absence, but as an active, charged field shaped by light, space, and perception. His works create quiet interiors—thresholds, corridors, windows, and doorways—where light becomes the primary subject, revealing space while simultaneously being contained by it.

Rooted in careful observation of urban environments in Hong Kong and Melbourne, Cheung translates fleeting encounters with light into meticulously constructed compositions, often originating from handmade architectural models. Across series such as Flat, Hidden, and Edge, the works oscillate between flatness and depth, intimacy and monumentality, clarity and ambiguity. The exhibition invites viewers into a meditative state, where meaning is not prescribed but emerges through personal reflection. In this subtle interplay of presence and emptiness, Cheung offers a space for stillness, introspection, and sensory awareness.
