Fou Gallery and Common Resonance are pleased to present Liminal, an intimate concert exploring the profound connection between the visual world of Szelit Cheung and the sonic responses of nine living composers.

Conceived as a direct dialogue with the exhibition, this program features a collection of works for violin and cello created specifically to respond to Cheung’s art. The music mirrors the atmospheric, wispy, and spiritual qualities of the visual installation, translating the artist’s themes into sound. Through the use of harmonics, delicate textures, and resonant stillness, the performance dissolves the separation between sound and image, creating an immersive atmosphere that brings new context to the viewing experience.

Musicians

The program features original musical responses by John Brockett, Stephen Cabell, Christine Elise Chen, Andrew Howes, Apsara Kasiraman, Whitney Sheng, Hyeon Joon Sohn, Peter Swanson, and Roger Zare.

The music will be performed by Logan Chiang (Violin) and Sara Gabalawi (Cello).

Logan Chiang is a Taiwanese violinist based in New York pursuing a DMA at New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development for Instrumental Performance with a sub-specialization in Concert Composition. Chiang diverged into diverse repertoire under the tutelage of Kurt Nikkanen and Giora Schmidt, and he performed in masterclasses hosted by Grace Shim, Peter Herresthal, and Qianqian Li. He performs for NYU’s Screen Scoring Department by premiering contemporary music from composers and serves as a Graduate Adjunct Violin faculty member. In March 2023, Chiang won the NYU Strings Concerto Competition and performed the Korngold Violin Concerto with the NYU Orchestra. In his most recent appearance, he performed Saint-Saëns’ 3 rd Violin Concerto in Thessaloniki with the Symphony Orchestra of the University of Macedonia, conducted by Georgios Vranos. Chiang is also the youngest laureate in the Senior Division of the 2024 Edition of the Chicago Violin Competition.

Sara Gabalawi is a dynamic NYC-based cellist with a performance career spanning twenty-one countries and twenty-four U.S. states. A versatile artist frequently engaged in New York, Philadelphia, and across Europe, she combines international perspective with technical mastery. Her distinguished academic pedigree includes studies at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and the Manhattan School of Music. She also holds a degree cum laude from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Sara is driven by a deep commitment to connecting with audiences of all backgrounds through performance. Her diverse training in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Amsterdam, and Brussels has shaped a unique artistic voice that thrives on cross-cultural exchange. Whether performing standard repertoire or contemporary works, she brings a wealth of global experience and profound musicality to the stage.

Common Resonance was established to bridge the contemporary art world with contemporary music. The series aims to add context to both disciplines by introducing an additional medium—sound—into the gallery space. By placing living composers in direct conversation with visual art, Common Resonance creates a layered, interdisciplinary environment where each art form amplifies and contextualizes the other.
