New York - Fou Gallery welcomes you to attend our 16mm Film Loops Workshop on Saturday, October 29th, from 2 to 4 pm and 4:30 to 6: 30 pm. Responding to the current exhibition at Fou, Suyi Xu: All that is Solid Melts into Air, presenters Emily Francisco and Joana Stillwell will guide participants through a lecture and workshop on 16mm filmmaking.  After analyzing some classic 16mm film examples, participants are encouraged to take inspiration from the current exhibition and create their own film loops under the instruction. As a result, their works will be projected as animations for everyone to view.  The workshop will include a drawing toolkit for every participant.

The history of 16mm film projectors dates back to the late 19th century. Due to the nature of the film projector, direct animation made by film painting has always played a significant role in experimental cinema, even with the comprehensive popularization of the digital world. This technology is also regarded as a part of Hand-Painted Film/Hand-Made Film. In mainstream media, the principle of making animation is to give an illusion of motion by sequentially playing different still images. This requires a filmmaker to understand the film’s frame, the frame rate, and the order of the images. However, hand-painted films offer a chance to disregard this fundamental idea of the frame. For example, Stan Brakhage uses quick cutting to disrupt the continuity of his films instead of concentrating on establishing a continuous motion. Norman McLaren's film animation Begone Dull Care took a more aggressive step, eliminating the grid in favor of drawing continuous lines on film and featuring free jazz as the soundtrack. In addition, to re-process the film itself can also enrich the final presentation. In the film Little Boy, Jordan Baseman scratched the photographic layer of his film in order to represent the grief of the survivors from the Hiroshima explosion.

Looking back to the exhibition Suyi Xu: All that is Solid Melts into Air at Fou Gallery, the creation process of artist Suyi Xu also makes an experimental attempt. She finds inspiration from classical and modern painting, opera, literature, philosophy, film, and fashion photography. She references or "appropriates" different images to tie together seemingly independent episodes into a modern magic realism play. In the workshop, we recommend that participants begin with abstract paintings or "appropriating" pieces from the exhibitions to create their own 16mm films.
