Fou Gallery cordially invites you to participate in A Public Poetry Reading: They Rise Like a Wave on Saturday, April 1, 2:00–4:30 pm. The event was initiated by poet and performer Catherine Chen and co-organized by Fou Gallery. Catherine Chen keenly captured the non-linear narrative curatorial concept adopted by Fou Gallery's current exhibition Meng Du: Shadow of Day, Shadow of Night, combined with the poetic literariness of Meng Du's works, hoping to create a speculative feast to focus on female creators and practitioners in the field of contemporary art, as well as the general public who are interested in this topic. Poets invited to this public poetry reading include Allison Albino, Dena Igusti, Megan Pinto, Kailee Pedersen, and Jess Yuan. The event is free and open to the public, and books They Rise Like a Wave and derivatives will be available for purchase, with a portion of proceeds going to the Red Canary Song organization.

The public poetry reading features poets from They Rise Like a Wave (2022), an anthology of Asian American women poets edited by Christine Kitano and Alycia Pirmohamed and published by Blue Oak Press. This poetry anthology aims to amplify the voices of Asian American women and non-binary poets in response to the challenges of reality. The authors include widely published and acclaimed poets such as Marilyn Chin, Franny Choi, Victoria Chang, Devi S. Laskar, and Bhanu Kapil, and emerging poets such as Paul Tran, Ryka Aoki, Hyejung Kook, and Monica Sok. The collection is committed to cultivating boundary-breaking poetics, experimenting with language, and revitalizing the historically narrow and oppressive Western canon. They Rise Like a Wave ​​intends to highlight that Asian American poetics cannot be reduced to a singular category or theme. Instead, the anthology intends to remind readers, particularly during this period of renewal and synthesis, that poetry has the power to both reflect lived experiences and inspire individuals to envision a more beautiful world.

About the Initiator

Catherine Chen is a poet and performer of Taiwanese heritage. Their writing has been published in Slate, The Rumpus, Hyperallergic, Apogee, and Nat. Brut, among others. They are the author of the chapbook Manifesto or: Hysteria (Big Lucks, 2019) and the forthcoming full-length collection Beautiful Machine Woman Language (Noemi Press, 2023). They have been awarded fellowships and residencies from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Monson Arts Center, Millay Colony, Poets House, and Lambda Literary. They have performed at the Museum of Moving Image, Asian American Writers’ Workshop, Omaha Under the Radar, Nowadays, and elsewhere. Their work has been supported by Creative Capital, Ma-Yi Theater, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, City Artists Grant Corps via New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA), and Sundress Academy for the Arts.

New moon

I cannot bear the scent of my body let alone its ‎essence its touch

Allison Albino

Allison Albino is a Filipina-American poet and French teacher who lives and writes in Harlem. Her work has appeared in Narrative, The Rumpus, The Lantern Review, Poetry Northwest, The Indiana Review, The Alaska Quarterly Review, The Common, and elsewhere. Her writing has received support from The Community of Writers, The Kenyon Review, and Tin House. She studied creative writing at Sarah Lawrence College and has an M.A. in French literature from NYU. She teaches at The Dalton School in New York City.

Dena Igusti

Dena Igusti is a queer, non-binary Indonesian Muslim poet, playwright, filmmaker, and FGC survivor & activist born and raised in Queens, New York. They are the author of CUT WOMAN (Game Over Books, 2020), which has been listed as a 2022 Perennial Award Winner and 2020 Harvard Bookstore Staff Pick and an Entropy Mag’s Best Of 2020-2021. They are a 2023 Asian American Writers’ Workshop Open City Fellow, 2023 Culture Push Fellow, 2022 Sundress Arts Resident, 2022 Best of the Net Nominee, 2021 Baldwin For The Arts Resident, 2020 Seventh Wave Editorial Resident, and more.

Kailee Pedersen

Kailee Pedersen is the author of fiction, essays, and poetry. She is a two-time honorable mention for the Otherwise Fellowship for emerging artists innovating on gender in speculative fiction. In 2015, she received an Individual Artist Fellowship in Nonfiction from the Nebraska Arts Council. Her poetry on queer and Asian-American themes has additionally received two Pushcart nominations. A graduate of Columbia University with a B.A. in Classics, she was adopted from Nanning, China, in 1996 and grew up in Nebraska, where her family owns a farm. She is represented by Paul Lucas at Janklow & Nesbit.

Megan Pinto

Megan Pinto's poems can be found or are forthcoming in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Guernica, Ploughshares, Lit Hub, and elsewhere. Megan has received scholarships and fellowships from the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, the Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing, the Port Townsend Writers' Conference, Storyknife, and an Amy Award from Poets & Writers. She is currently a 2022-2023 Artist Fellow at The Peace Studio, and her first collection of poetry is forthcoming with Four Way Books in Fall 2024.

Jess Yuan is a poet, educator, and architect. Her first collection, Slow Render, is forthcoming as the winner of the Airlie Prize, and her chapbook Threshold Amnesia (2020) was the winner of the Yemassee Chapbook Contest. She has received support from Kundiman and Miami Writers Institute, and her poems appear in Best New Poets, Tupelo Quarterly Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, jubilat, and elsewhere.
