(New York) Fou Gallery sincerely invites you to join our special event, Cyanotype Workshop: Emotion Scroll, on January 14, 2024. The event is specially designed for our 10th-anniversary commemorative exhibition, Take a Break. Led by artist Han Qin, participants are invited to boldly express themselves through body language, contributing collaboratively to create a cyanotype masterpiece. Han Qin is an experienced practitioner in cyanotype art and a digital art educator dedicated to exploring artistic expression through cyanotype mediums. Her exhibitions themed around immigrant identity have been showcased at various venues recently, including the Heckscher Museum of Art, Modern Museum of Long Island, Nassau County Museum of Art, Gallery North (NY), Fou Gallery (NY), etc.

Take a Break, our 10th-anniversary exhibition, showcases artworks by artists who've continuously engaged in artistic dialogues with the gallery over the past decade. Despite the distinctiveness of each artist's creative concepts, the overarching approach links personal experiences with our collective memory, blends mental states with physical spaces, and the relationships between urban life and nature. The Cyanotype Workshop: Emotion Scroll operates on a similar premise. Participants will exhibit their physical movements (or may opt for a pre-prepared cut-out by the artist), gradually transferring onto a collective 2-meter-long scroll. This completed scroll will serve as a mirror, presenting an artistic representation of the transition from individual micro-emotions to universal human experiences.

This event also carries educational value. Live demonstrations will showcase the technology of how to create cyanotype artwork. Throughout the workshop, artist Han Qin will guide the audience through the following  steps to complete a piece collectively:

  • Step 1: Choose a cut-out.

Upon entering, select a pre-cut shape tailored to resonate with the emotions of your relocation or immigration experience. These cut-outs, designed considering body language and the nuances of cultural adaptation, connect with your current feelings based on factors such as time, age, gender, and vulnerability.

  • Step 2: Place your cut-out.

Visualize the ultimate scroll as a depiction of the River of Life, streaming from its inception to culmination. Place your cut-out on the River of Life, marking your present life stage. Beneath it, articulate a few words that convey your emotions (consult the provided vocabulary). This straightforward action converts the cyanotype surface into a collective canvas of shared feelings.

  • Step 3: Exposure time.

Over an hour, as more participants contribute, the cyanotype table evolves into a dynamic mosaic, capturing the essence of our shared human experience.

  • Step 4: Wash and reveal

The event's climax unfolds as the cyanotype is washed before revealing the collaborative image. This final step transforms collective emotions into a visual representation of our shared journey. Witness the magic as individual expressions blend into a vibrant, interconnected whole.
