Fou Gallery cordially invites you to join us for the Duo Improvisation: We Are Brave, scheduled for Saturday, June 24th, from 2:00 to 4:30 PM. This captivating performance brings together Iranian-American musician Niloufar Shiri and Korean musician Jeonghyeon Joo for an engaging dialogue between the kamāncheh and haegeum, enhanced with electronic elements. The event draws its inspiration from the artwork "We Are Brave" (see image below), featured in the ongoing exhibition titled After Midnight... by artist Helia Chitsazan. Depicting the hidden emotions that arise from the circumstances of migration, exile, and conflicts within a female group, “We Are Brave” intensifies the tension through the shadow cast behind the two women, amplifying their body language and revealing the profound strength that resides within their hearts—strength that goes beyond mere gestures. In this vein, the musicians, with their multicultural backgrounds, will lead the audience to explore the fusion between traditional instruments and electronic music, the interconnectedness of emotion and body, and the possibility of finding faith even in challenging circumstances.

Kamāncheh and haegeum, two bowed string instruments steeped in a vibrant history, can be traced back to the "zheng," a zither-like instrument from the Central Plains of China. Musicians Niloufar and Jeonghyeon, through their artistry, aim to continue this legacy by infusing these instruments with new performance techniques and compositional styles in a contemporary manner. The Duo Improvisation not only delves into the musicians' individual experiences but also explores their delicate relationships. Through the interplay of friction between the strings and the synchronized movements of their bodies, the performance becomes an empowering narrative that intends to inspire and uplift the audience.

The event will be 2.5 hours, including introductions and intermissions. Complimentary beverages and snacks will be available.
