Corresponding with Fou Gallery’s latest exhibition Meng Du: Embers, Mandarin Stage Group is going to present a musical concert, In This Chaos, at 7:30-9:00pm on Saturday, December 7th. Through the lens of each character and their narrative way of singing, the selected songs in the concert attempt to expose the journey of self-struggle that every individual has to go through in this chaotic world. Discovering the inner and outer tumult, the feelings of anxiety, depression and unsettledness that may eventually lead us down the road towards a binary status: flaring up or dying out, like embers. Rather than the rock and roll numbers with their heavy, “aggressive” style, we want to present songs that are more lyrical. With these emotional and delicate musical depictions, we hope to give a voice to those who have not been represented yet, or been afraid to speak out, with stories and feelings of struggle to survive and create a life, of aging, or lack of achievement.

The selected numbers are mostly from well-known rock musical books, including Next to Normal, Rent, Spring Awakening, Tick, Tick, Boom!, and so on.

About Mandarin Stage Group

Mandarin Stage Group is formed for the charitable purpose of creating a Mandarin-oriented cultural and artistic hub for emerging theatre talent, as well as for audiences, in New York City. Originally founded in 2019 as NYU Mandarin Musical Club, the group’s first production was, Mandarin-Language Man of La Mancha, which played an influential role in the community. Building upon this success, MSG continues to develop a home for Mandarin-speaking theatre professionals, particularly for those who are underrepresented in the theatre industry, both in the States and internationally. The primary focus of MSG is to produce staged readings, concerts and full production of musicals to further the development of classic and new pieces in both Mandarin and English language. By creating diverse theatrical productions, MSG enacts its core belief that art and culture can overcome language barriers and differences among people, and build a world with more mutual understanding.
