Fou Gallery is delighted to announce that we will be hosting a special Iranian Movie Night on Saturday, July 8th, from 7:00 to 9:30 PM. This screening will showcase three thought-provoking Iranian films that delve into themes of mortality, individual choice, and intimate relationships. The featured films include Taste of Cherry (1997) by the renowned director Abbas Kiarostami, along with two short films, White Winged Horse (2020) and Lunch Time (2017), directed by emerging talents.
Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in an informal discussion. Amidst the backdrop of present political turmoil, this event aims to honor the resilience of arts and cultural practitioners while celebrating the works of both established and emerging Iranian filmmakers. These films offer poignant narratives that shed light on the harsh realities faced by individuals in Iran, providing a unique perspective on life and the choices we make.

Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Kiarostami’s Taste of Cherry is an emotionally complex meditation on life and death. The film follows the journey of Mr. Badii (played by Homayoun Ershadi), a middle-aged man who drives through the hilly outskirts of Tehran in search of someone to rescue or bury him. Along the way, he encounters three passengers from diverse backgrounds, each offering unique perspectives on mortality and individual choice.

Abbas Kiarostami
Abbas Kiarostami, born in Tehran on June 22, 1940, was one of Iran's most acclaimed and influential filmmakers. With a background in art and literature, he started his career in filmmaking by directing short films and documentaries, including the notable works Bread and Alley (1970), First Graders (1984), and Homework (1989). Kiarostami's international recognition began after the 1979 revolution, with films such as Where Is the Friend's House? (1987) and Close-up (1990), which blurred the lines between documentary and fiction. His renowned The Koker Trilogy, consisting of Where Is the Friend's House? (1987), And Life Goes On (1992), Through the Olive Trees (1994), garnered critical acclaim and international success. The next film Taste of Cherry (1997) became the first—and so far, only—Iranian film to win the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.
In the new century, Kiarostami explored various artistic forms, including photography, installation art, poetry, and teaching. He embraced digital filmmaking for projects such as Ten (2002) and Shirin (2008), and ventured abroad for films like Certified Copy (2010) and Like Someone in Love (2012). Kiarostami passed away on July 4, 2016, in Paris, where he had been undergoing medical treatment. His final work, 24 Frames, was posthumously completed and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.

Mahyar Mandegar
Born in Tehran, Iran, in 1996, he is currently based in Los Angeles, California, where he is studying directing at the AFI Conservatory. He started his career as an editor and simultaneously ventured into directing his own films. His works were screened at numerous festivals, including Berlinale, Venice film festival, and Camerimage. While pursuing his undergraduate studies at Tehran University of Art, he participated in an exchange program with Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf, during which he also directed a documentary in Berlin.

Alireza Ghasemi
Alireza Ghasemi is an Iranian screenwriter, film director and producer. He is renowned for directing the award-winning short films Lunch Time, Better than Neil Armstrong, and Extra Sauce. Ghasemi’s films have been screened at several festivals that qualify for Academy recognition. Notably, His short film Lunch Time received a nomination for the Short Film Palme d’Or at the 70th Annual Cannes Film Festival in 2017.
