NEW YORK —Fou Gallery is pleased to announce the event The Art of Imperfection: Kintsugi Talk at Fou, which will take place on Feb. 19 and 26, 2022. Immersing in the exhibition Crafting the Past from the Future, Kintsugi practitioner Yiheng will lead the audience to learn different aspects of Kintsugi, such as its historical origins, methodologies of repairing, materials, specific techniques, and derivative art, through detailed demonstrations of the Kintsugi’s process. This event focuses on sharing the art and techniques of Kintsugi and raising inquiry on the aesthetic thinking behind Kintsugi. This event is open to all interested audiences.

“Kintsugi'' (Japanese: 金継ぎ, 'golden joinery or golden repair') is a decorative restoration methodology that utilizes natural lacquer (lacquer) as an adhesive and gold powder as a decoration to repair broken ceramics. Kintsugi practices have been increasingly used in the restoration of everyday objects in recent years, resulting in a variety of techniques employing new materials. Yiheng, as a Kintsugi practitioner, studied with Japanese lacquer master and Kintsugi specialist Gen Saratani and continued her studies with Chinese lacquer specialist Rongqiang Wu (Qifenzui Studio). Yiheng specializes in using natural materials for Kintsugi, and through study, practice, exploration, and reflection, she has developed a new understanding of "beauty" — the pursuit of "exquisite beauty" in traditional Chinese aesthetics is replaced by letting "beauty" be restored and cherished through ages. This timeless perception is also what Yiheng hopes to convey to the audience through this sharing session.

The current exhibition Crafting the Past from the Future focuses on how artists or crafters held rich visions of the past and future and how their artworks came out of these imaginings. This exhibition examines the changing roles of craft: the selected artists exemplify how artists or crafters from different time periods have renewed the concepts of craft, from folk art for the great mass of people to new technology or material-based crafts that are almost indistinguishable from fine arts. Kintsugi's practices, in response, have been changing and evolving in the course of time. However, the essence of Kintsugi is to prolong the life of beloved objects by restoring them with our hands and embodying the heart of cherishing, which might help us broaden the definition of beauty in the Digital Revolution.

 

Materials Provided:

Purple sand ware, Japanese tea bowls, earthenware (low density pottery), broken utensils, a humid box, olive oil, etc.

*The audiences do not need to prepare any materials. As natural raw lacquer may cause allergic reactions, audiences are not recommended to touch the material during the sharing session.

Contents of the Talk:

Part 1: The thinking process on the method of repairing broken pottery and the understanding of the materials used for Kintsugi;

Part 2: The demonstration and explanation of traditional Kintsugi method;

Part 3: Introduction of the other modern adhesives;

Part 4: Derivation of Kintsugi;

Part 5: The presenter will share her sentiments regarding Kintsugi as well as personal perspective of how to appreciate this traditional art of restoration.

纽约—否画廊荣幸地宣布将于2022年2月19日与2月26日举办金缮修复分享活动。沉浸于展览《艺久弥新》中,金缮修复实践者Yiheng将带领观众了解金缮艺术的历史渊源,金缮的修复思路、使用材料、具体修复步骤、金缮衍生艺术,并现场演示传统金缮修复的工艺技巧。本次活动侧重于金缮修复技艺的分享以及技艺背后关于美学思考的讨论,对所有感兴趣的观众开放。

金缮,日语中叫做金継ぎ,英语中常用golden joinery/golden repair或日语音译Kintsugi指代。传统金缮是一种以天然生漆(大漆)作为接着剂,将有磕碰伤、缺碴、或破碎的器皿黏合修复,并施以金粉作为装饰的器物修复技法。近年,金缮技法已经逐渐普及到日常器物的修复之中,并且衍生出了各种使用新型材料的技法。Yiheng作为一位设计师和传统金缮修复技法的实践者,先后师从纽约漆艺家、金缮修复师更谷源,以及浙江龙泉七分醉工作室大漆匠人吴荣强学习传统金缮修复技法。Yiheng擅长以天然材料为修复原料,通过学习,实践,探索与反思,对“美”产生了新的理解——传统中式审美中对于“精致美”的追求被如何让“美”在岁月的洗礼中被还原,被珍惜所替代。这种隽永的感知也是Yiheng希望通过这次分享会传达给观众的。

正在画廊展出的展览《艺久弥新》关注艺术家、手工艺人对过去和未来的愿景,以及他们的作品是如何从这些想象中诞生。此展览在于探索“工艺这一变化的概念”;邀请参展的艺术家们,从精于面向大众的民间艺术到与艺术似乎无异的以新技术或新材料为基础的工艺,展示着不同时期的艺术家/手工艺人如何推动工艺美术向前发展。与此呼应,金缮技法也随着时间流逝在不断变化,发展,而其之根本,在于怀着让心爱的器物得以长久保存的愿望,用双手将器物修复,体现惜物之心。这些或许可以帮助我们在艺术数字革命中,重新拓展美的定义。

紫砂器,日本茶碗,土陶(密度低陶器),破碎器皿,荫箱,橄榄油等

观众无需准备任何材料,因天然生漆容易引发过敏反应,分享会过程中不推荐触碰

Yiheng is a graphic artist and a Kintsugi practitioner. The breaking of a tea bowl during her relocation from Los Angeles to New York led her to the study of Kintsugi – the Japanese art of ceramic restoration using lacquer and gold. She studied with Japanese lacquer master and Kintsugi specialist Gen Saratani in 2018 and continued her studies with Chinese lacquer specialist Rongqiang Wu (Qifenzui Studio) in 2019. Recently, Yiheng has been polishing her Kintsugi skills while researching specific techniques. Yiheng greatly enjoys working with her hands and has restored earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, Yixing ware, as well as other objects made from agate, jade, and resin.

Yiheng 是一位设计师和传统金缮修复技法的实践者。因为从美国西岸至东岸的搬家途中意外破碎的一个茶碗,她开始了金缮的学习。2018年至2019年间,她先后师从纽约漆艺家、金缮修复师更谷源,以及浙江龙泉七分醉工作室大漆匠人吴荣强学习传统金缮修复技法。此后,她不断思考和研究金缮修复的各个步骤。Yiheng 非常享受亲手修复器物的过程,她至今已修复过陶器、瓷器、紫砂器、以及玛瑙、玉石、树脂等材料制成的多类器皿。
