New York - Fou Gallery warmly welcomes you to a classical flute and guitar recital. This recital will bring together two musicians, Zuoliang Liu and Jiujiu Wu, who will perform a selection of classical flute and guitar repertoires in attempt to connect with the inner meaning of the current exhibition Sotto Voce at Fou Gallery —— to disappear into oneself and blend into the world. The audience will enjoy a leisurely summer afternoon filled with art.

Shuling Guo's artistic creation is inextricably linked to her sailing experience. Since 2019, she has broadened her horizons by sailing to Granada, St. Lucia, Martinique, the United States Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas in the Caribbean, through Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and lastly Maryland; while, in the company of the sea and the sky, she has eliminated the distractions of the world. She spent much of her time exploring her inner soul. "In this way, this has an intensity that can build," she explains, but inevitably there follows a shift to a softer voice. It is in this balance I find a deeper connection to the moments of tranquility in nature and in my heart, and this is what comes through in these paintings." Thus, the paintings in the exhibition Sotto Voce, named after the places where Shuling Guo sails, are meticulous and subtle. And, the details of these paintings, whether the gradient of the sky or the capture of light, show the humble yet devoted character of Shuling Guo.

Zuoliang Liu and Jiujiu Wu will perform classical flute and guitar to complement the spiritual world the paintings convey. Classical music may easily evoke certain emotions and recall spatial experiences. The long, slow, and smooth rhythms, as well as the short, rapid, and flat rhythms, will offer individuals distinct sensations of expansion and isolation; also, the high volume may contribute to a sense of anxiousness, while the low volume may contribute to relaxation and comfort. The overall selection of recital repertoires adheres to the movements of the ocean, depicting  waves chasing and whispering winds. Selections ranging from Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu to French composer and conductor Marin Marais, as well as performances of classic and modern tango, enrich the exhibition Sotto Voce by bringing a sonic dimension to the spiritual world shown.

Music is a language itself, and it can supplement the languages of words and visuals.  Fou Gallery hopes that this “Toward the Sea” classical flute & guitar recital, alongside Shuling Guo's paintings, will lead the audience to build a more intimate and emotional relationship with the sea.

否画廊诚挚邀请您参加向海而生: 古典长笛&吉他演奏会。此活动邀请两位音乐家刘作亮与伍九久，以精心选择的古典长笛与吉他曲目，谱写否画廊当下展览 《低语》的内在意境：遁影自我，融于万千。在本次演奏会中，观众将伴乐游画，渡过一个悠扬的夏日午后。

郭淑玲的绘画艺术创作与她的航海经历不可分割。自2019年起，两年的航海经历拓宽了她的足迹：从加勒比的格拉纳达，圣卢西亚，马提尼克，美属维京群岛，多米尼克共和国，巴哈马，经由美国南部的佛罗里达，乔治亚，南卡，北卡，维吉尼亚，六月抵达马里兰的安纳普里斯，渡过夏天；同时，与海天作伴，除了需要照顾日常起居与航海事宜，她消除了世事纷扰。大把的留白时间自然而然地被用于向内探索。如她所谈到：“在这之中，坚强的内核渐渐清晰，但同时也一定会发展出柔和的一面。正是在这种平衡中，我找到了自然的宁静和我心底的平静更深的联系。” 画如其人，在展览《低语》中，以淑玲航行所到之处命名的画作，细致微妙。所描画的天空之间变化，仅用色彩的毫厘之差来表现，幽然独白创作心境，谦逊又专注。

而在本次演奏会中，音乐家刘作亮与伍九久将用古典长笛与吉他恰如其分地来充实这种心理状态与气氛。古典音乐有空间艺术、情绪艺术深藏其中。节奏的长缓舒、短平快给人以环境的延展与局促之分；音量高低轻重，有情绪的急迫紧张或者放松惬意之别。整体演奏会曲目选择也遵循了海洋的客观规律，时而惊涛骇浪，时而静如止水；也符合听者的心理想象，既有饱含奔海而去的愉悦篇章，也有凝视海洋的低吟片段。

演奏会的选曲跨越不同时代与风格，内容十分丰富。上半场两位音乐家将率先演奏日本作曲家武满彻的《面朝大海》（Toward the sea）点题；继而是技巧华丽，音响丰满，充满力量的《波兰舞曲》（Andante et polonaise)，由19世纪法国著名吉他作曲家拿破仑· 柯斯特作曲；也有雷冈蒂浪漫吉他独奏《第八号练习曲》（Etude no.8）等。幕间休息后的下半场将演奏长笛独奏巴洛克時期法国作曲家、指挥家马兰·马雷的《西班牙福利亚舞曲》（ Les Folies d’Espagne）；紧接为罗伯特·德·维西的《丑角恰空舞曲》（Chaconne des harlequins）；“新探戈”音乐领航人皮亚佐拉的曲目《 咖啡馆1930》（Cafe 1930），在古典乐技巧下融入探戈节奏，其中还添加爵士乐等元素；最终以西班牙作曲家恩里克·格拉纳多斯的《诗意华尔兹》（Valses poétiques）圆满收尾。

音乐本身是一种语言，它可以拓展文字与视觉语言。希望本次“向海而生“古典长笛&吉他音乐会以“触发源”的方式，引导听众在郭淑玲画作环绕之中，构建出更私密的对海洋的情绪。

Flute

Zuoliang Liu started learning flute at the age of 7. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in ShanghaiConservatory of Music under the guidance of Professor Shengqi He. He earned his Master and DoctoralDegree from Manhattan School of Music, studying with Linda Chesis. Zuoliang Liu has appeared on many prestigious stages and competitions around the world, including the Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center for Performing Arts Washington D.C, Lincoln Center, Golden Bell Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition, the Kobe International Flute Competition, and the Chinese Golden Bell Award. 
As a chamber music player, he appeared in the Bowdoin International Music Festival as the recipient of the Kaplan Fellowship in 2014 and 2016. In 2019, he was awarded as the resident artist at Telemann Festival in Magdeburg, Germany. He has collaborated with world-class musicians, such as Lewis Kaplan, Lucie Robert, and Charles Neidich. He also gives solo performances in the U.S., China, Japan, and Germany.

刘作亮自7岁学习长笛。他在上海音乐学院获得学士学位，师从何声奇教授。之后于曼哈顿音乐学院获得了硕士和博士学位，师从Linda Chesis。刘作亮曾在卡内基音乐厅、华盛顿肯尼迪表演艺术中心、林肯中心、莉莉安·富克斯室内乐比赛、神户国际长笛比赛、中国金钟奖等世界著名舞台和比赛中亮相。作为室内乐演奏家，他在2014年和2016年以卡普兰奖学金(Kaplan Fellowship)获得者的身份参加了鲍登国际音乐节。2019年，他在德国马格德堡泰勒曼艺术节上被授予驻场艺术家奖。他曾与世界级音乐家合作，如Lewis Kaplan, Lucie Robert, and Charles Neidich。他还在美国、中国、日本、德国等地进行了个人演出。

Guitar

Jiujiu Wu was born in 2001. At the age of nine, he began to learn classical guitar with his father. He later studied with Bing Wu. Jiujiu Wu has been educated and cultivated by many Maestro, including Associate Professor Bao Xu at Sichuan Conservatory of Music, guitarist You Wang, Guillem Pérez-Quer at Liceu Conservatory of Music in Barcelona, and David Starobin at Manhattan School of Music, Now he is studying with Eliot Fisk at New England Conservatory of music.

His musicianship is acknowledged through winning awards at international competitions such as First Prize of the International Guitar Festival ‘Alirio Diaz’ 2020 in Rust, Austria, First Prize of 16th Boston International Guitar Festival Competition, and Second Prize of Shenzhen Guitar Art Festival in 2020. After winning many competitions, He became one of the artists of the year by EuroStrings Project co-funded by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union in 2021, He also performed in festivals such as Tampere Guitar Festival in Finland and Mottola Guitar Festival in Italy as a Eurostrings artist.

伍九久出生于2001年。九岁时，开始跟随父亲学习古典吉他，之后师从吴兵。伍九久先后受到四川音乐学院副教授徐宝、吉他演奏家王右、巴塞罗那Liceu音乐学院教授Guillem Pérez-Quer、曼哈顿音乐学院的David Starobin教授等众多优秀音乐家的栽培，现师从新英格兰音乐学院的Eliot Fisk教授。

他的音乐才华在国际比赛中得到了肯定，如2020年奥地利Rust “Alirio Diaz” 国际吉他节获得一等奖，第16届波士顿国际吉他节比赛一等奖，2020年深圳吉他艺术节二等奖。在多次比赛中获胜后，他于2021年被欧盟“创意欧洲”计划联合资助的EuroStrings项目评为年度艺术家之一，并以EuroStrings艺术家的身份参加了芬兰Tampere吉他节、意大利Mottola吉他节等音乐节。
